The Museum of Modern Art Wörlen in Passau is an important center for modern and contemporary art in the heart of the city on the three rivers. It was founded in 1990 by architect Hanns Egon Wörlen, who not only secured the artistic legacy of his father Georg Philipp Wörlen, but also created a lively forum for international art.
The collection includes works from Expressionism, New Objectivity and Constructivist art through to current contemporary positions - including works by renowned artists such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Günther Uecker and Eduardo Chillida. The museum is housed in several listed old town houses whose architecture combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. The modern conversion creates spacious, bright rooms that provide an impressive setting for the works of art - with views of the Danube and the city's historic fortresses. On around 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, the MMK displays a high-quality permanent collection as well as regularly changing special exhibitions with international artists and thematic focuses.
