The mermaid Rusalka has fallen in undying love with a human. Despite all warnings, she is prepared to leave the familiar waters behind and enter the human sphere for her love. But the price for her new form is high and bitter: the loss of her voice makes her an outsider who neither understands the laws of the strange world nor can be understood by it. She wanders around restlessly until she has to make her greatest sacrifice ...
With the "lyrical fairy tale" Rusalka, Antonín Dvořák created what is probably the best-known Czech opera. The poetic libretto about feelings of longing, homelessness and uprootedness bears similarities to Undine (Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué) and The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen). The score shines with its uniquely shimmering colors, its sensual melodies and its masterful orchestration. Even today, the seemingly naïve story conceals a profound message about the order of the elements and poses the question of the compatibility of man and nature. After more than eighty years, the opera returns to the stage at Bismarckplatz.
