Theater Bielefeld has been shaping the cultural life of East Westphalia for over 100 years. As a three-division house with drama, music theater and dance, it delights over 200,000 visitors every year with its artistic diversity and lively tradition.
The Bielefeld Theater was opened in 1904 after a citizens' initiative made its construction possible through donations. From the very beginning, it was a place where the city's society realized its need for more culture - and to this day it is the cultural center of East Westphalia, living and changing with its audience.
Architecturally an impressive testimony to the early 20th century, the building combines tradition and modernity. Following extensive renovations, the building now shines in new splendor and is home to a lively three-section house, in which drama, music theater and dance are united under one roof. Around 370 employees - from stage technology to make-up and dramaturgy to the ensembles - work to bring creative ideas to the stage. Centuries-old material is brought into relation with the present day and new, contemporary plays are discovered.
With over 600 performances per season and more than 200,000 visitors, Theater Bielefeld is a place where people sing, play, dance, build, sew and design - a lively center of artistic diversity that brings together people from the region and far beyond.
