Theater Dortmund is one of the largest multi-discipline theatres in Germany and was founded in 1904 as the Stadttheater Dortmund - today around 500 employees work there in artistic and technical areas. The theater has six divisions - opera, ballet, drama, concerts (with the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra), children's and youth theater and the innovative Academy for Theater and Digitality.

The architectural highlight is the striking opera house, which was opened in 1966 with its eye-catching dome above the main hall. The impressive building combines steel, glass and copper and offers space for around 1,100 spectators. The generous, transparent façade creates an inviting connection between the interior and the city.

Every year, the theater presents around 70 productions and reaches around 250,000 visitors with operas, plays, ballet performances, concerts and youth formats - including Germany's first citizens' opera and the award-winning Young Opera program. The Academy for Theater and Digitality, part of the company since 2019, is a globally unique center for artistic research and digital innovation. It promotes new forms of theater and technologies and connects culture, science and audiences.

Whether elegant opera, experimental drama, family theater or digital performative formats - a visit to Theater Dortmund offers artistic diversity, innovative spaces and an architectural presence in the heart of the city.
