The actor, singer and choreographer Jörn-Felix Alt, who Dortmund audiences have already seen on stage as Clifford Bradshaw in Cabaret , celebrates his debut as a director with Märchen im Grand-Hotel .
Hollywood meets high nobility: American film producer Makintosh is on the verge of bankruptcy. The reason for this is that he has long been short of exciting, exotic and sensational new material for his next film. So his daughter Marylou travels to Europe without further ado, where she stumbles upon the kind of original story in a grand hotel in the south of France that only life itself can write. It involves, among others, an eccentric infanta, her flighty fiancé, a disguised hotel heir and many other characters who, like Marylou, are all searching for one and the same thing: a fairytale happy ending!
Paul Abraham's comedy operetta Märchen im Grand-Hotel premiered in Vienna in 1934 - the first stage of Abraham's long exile after he had been forced to leave Berlin as a Jewish artist shortly after the National Socialists seized power. Based on Alfred Savoir's comedy The Grand Duchess and the Waiter , Alfred Grünwald and Fritz Löhner-Beda wrote a libretto that can be read as both a social satire and a parody of the operetta genre itself and to which Abraham's music spans a wide stylistic range, from the waltz to the foxtrot to the tango.
