Big rock musical meets impressive open-air backdrop: The DomStufen-Festspiele 2026 will present Andrew Lloyd Webber's rousing work Jesus Christ Superstar in a production full of energy, passion and spectacular images - in the middle of the vast Erfurt sky.
In summer 2026, the DomStufen-Festspiele will once again transform the historic cathedral square in front of the cathedral and Severi Church into a unique open-air stage for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. In Peter Lund's production, the powerful songs of the legendary rock musical will resound - illustrated by impressive choreography, haunting soundscapes and a staging that retells the last days of Jesus of Nazareth: not as a classic passion, but as a story of revolution, intrigue, power and love.
Musical direction is in the hands of Clemens Fieguth, while stage design and costumes combine ritual and contemporary stage epic. The spectacular backdrop of the 70 cathedral steps becomes the arena for an epic tale - around 2,200 spectators per performance experience thrilling scenes between splendor and abyss, between longing and rebellion.
As one of the highlights of German open-air theater, the 2026 festival promises to be a major cultural event: a combination of musical history, scenic power and an urban open-air experience. Anyone who loves open-air theater should not miss this event.
