Friendship, money, and the big questions of everyday life: With "Money Matters," Platypus Theater brings an English-language play for young audiences to the stage of the Kleist Forum. The play is aimed particularly at fifth and sixth graders and uses humor and suspense to explore solidarity and social differences.
In Money Matters, three young adults meet by chance at Berlin Airport—twenty years after they last saw each other. Harry, Grace, and Mechthild were in the same fifth-grade class at a London elementary school. While waiting for their flight, they reminisce about formative moments from their school days.
Their memories center on a school trip to Germany. All three of them are eager to participate, but it quickly becomes apparent that not all families can afford the trip. While Harry's mother considers the trip a bargain, Mechthild's mother simply does not have the money for it. The situation puts the children's friendship to the test.
Grace tries to find a solution: the children want to collect money by doing odd jobs so that Mechthild can still go on the trip. But their efforts are not enough, and in the end they get into trouble while trying to find other ways to raise the money.
The English-language play by Platypus Theater combines humorous scenes with more serious topics such as social inequality, solidarity, and responsibility. Money Matters invites young audiences to reflect on the value of friendship and how to handle money.
