A classic fairy tale meets modern theater art: With "Beauty and the Beast", Lucy Kirkwood and Katie Mitchell present a clever, playful and humorous adaptation of the well-known story at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater - a play for the whole family.

"Once upon a time, in a faraway land called France, many years ago ..." is how the two fairies Mister Pink and Cécile begin the old fairy tale of the beautiful Belle and the enchanted Beast. Belle's father gets lost in an abandoned castle on his way home to his daughters. As he has no present for Belle, he steals a rose and is caught. The lord of the castle turns out to be a terrifying beast. The father has to promise to take Belle to the castle. From then on, she is to live with the beast.

Terrible, horrible, horrible? It's not quite that bad after all: her every wish is granted immediately and the beast turns out to be nicer than expected. Beauty could enjoy the time. Why does the Beast ask her every night if she loves him?

Presenting duo Pink and Cécile have their rustproof, weatherproof, ground-breaking, brain-tapping thought catcher and lots of cheeky comments with them in their fairytale show. But how will the story end?

Lucy Kirkwood and Katie Mitchell's theatrical adaptation of the French folk tale of "Beauty and the Beast" is original, humorous and allows the audience to rediscover the familiar characters. A story about the power of love, inner values and the courage to look behind facades.
