With Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece "La traviata", the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater brings one of the most moving and at the same time most socially critical operas in the repertoire to the stage - a gripping drama full of passion, sacrifice and musical depth.
Violetta, a famous Parisian prostitute, leads a life between splendor and misery, celebrating lavish parties and suffering from great loneliness at the same time. She has long since stopped believing in true love - until the young Alfredo, the scion of a good family, appears and captures her heart. She leaves her luxurious life and moves to the country with him. But their happiness is not to last long: Alfredo's father sees the family's reputation in danger and demands that Violetta end the relationship. The young couple's happiness is put to the test.
Together with "Rigoletto" and "Il trovatore", "La traviata" belongs to Verdi's so-called "trilogia popolare". The special feature of "La traviata" was that it was set in the present day and, instead of historical material or a mythological theme, chose the socially critical story about a Parisian courtesan, which Alexandre Dumas the Younger had published as a novel in 1848 and later as a play. But it was Verdi's music that immortalized the material.
Musically, the opera impresses with its melodic intensity, psychological depth and dramatic expressiveness. Arias such as "Sempre libera" or "Addio, del passato" show Verdi's ingenious ability to capture emotions in music.
