From April 11 to October 18, 2026, the exhibition "Karl Hofer" at Achberg Castle near picturesque Lake Constance will take an intensive look at one of the most important painters of German modernism - powerful, clever and full of interstices.
In the idyllic atmosphere of Achberg Castle, nestled in the gentle hilly landscape of the Ravensburg district, Karl Hofer (1878-1955) presents himself from his nuanced side: over 60 paintings from all creative phases show how the artist developed his own pictorial language between New Objectivity and Magical Realism - characterized by clarity, emotional depth and great humanity. The exhibition is complemented by works from the Halle School and Willi Baumeister - creating a dialog between Hofer's work and its reception in East and West after 1945.
The historic castle with its elegant rooms provides an atmospheric setting for the paintings: Wood-paneled salons, high incidence of light and the view out onto the garden enhance the experience of time and art. Visitors stroll through rooms in which light, color and form are not only observed, but can be physically experienced.
Accompanying programs with special guided tours, offers for families, hands-on activities and concerts expand the exhibition and make it a lively place for cultural encounters. Visitors to the exhibition not only enter a retrospective, but also embark on a search for traces of artistic integrity, the position of man in the picture and a work that is located between reconciliation and harrowing contemporary history.
