The Mendelssohn House Leipzig is much more than a museum - it is an authentic place of sound and a living memorial that gives space to Felix Mendelssohn's work in its private and artistic dimensions.
The Mendelssohn House in Leipzig, Goldschmidtstraße 12, was Felix Mendelssohn's last home - he lived here with his family from 1845 until his death in 1847. Today it is the composer's only surviving private residence and functions as a unique museum that brings to life the life, work and environment of one of the most important musicians of the Romantic period.
The original furniture, letters, manuscripts, watercolors and music documents can be seen in the reconstructed apartment - in rooms that Mendelssohn himself used, including his study and music room. Particularly impressive is the historic music salon, where musical encounters took place in Mendelssohn's time and which is now regularly used for Sunday matinees.
One highlight is the interactive Effektorium: here you can playfully slip into the role of the conductor, change timbres and experience Mendelssohn's original works in a new sound. The offer is complemented by exhibitions on his sister Fanny Hensel and the conductor Kurt Masur as well as a varied educational program for all age groups.

The house is nestled in a historic garden, and the former coach house houses an intimate concert hall - places that make a visit a comprehensive experience of musical history, living culture and personal experience. The Mendelssohn Festival takes place once a year around the anniversary of Mendelssohn's death - a renowned festival that carries his musical legacy into the present and celebrates Leipzig's rich musical tradition.
