A mysterious woman, two brothers and a gloomy castle - Debussy's Pelléas and Mélisande takes us into a world full of allusions, longing and tragic entanglements.
The opera illuminates the hidden depths of the human soul in a finely nuanced tonal language - enigmatic, poetic and shatteringly beautiful.
A gloomy castle and its secretive inhabitants - this is the setting of Claude Debussy's only completed opera, premiered in 1902. An enigmatic and morbid atmosphere lies like a veil over the dark realm in which King Arkel, head of the family, rules over a strange group of unfortunates. At its center is a love triangle: the stepbrothers Golaud and Pelleas are Arkel's grandsons - and both love Melisande, the mysteriously beautiful and sad woman whom Golaud found weeping in the forest. The music delicately and enigmatically feels its way out of the silence, illuminating the infinitely colorful nuances of the human soul, its fears, longings and abysses. With "Pelleas and Melisande", director Dirk Schmeding returns to the Staatstheater Darmstadt after the acclaimed production of "The Tales of Hoffmann".
