Mystery, power and playing with the fire of love: with Turandot, the Staatstheater Nürnberg brings a masterpiece of great opera literature to the stage - powerful, mysterious and emotionally stirring right up to the last note.
Ice-cold and unattainable - this is how Princess Turandot appears, keeping her potential husbands at arm's length with deadly riddles. Anyone who cannot answer her three questions not only loses the chance to win her hand, but also their life. But then Calaf appears on the scene. Determined, courageous and driven by passion, he answers all three riddles seemingly effortlessly - and now claims what no one has achieved before: Turandot's heart.
Giacomo Puccini's opera comes to an abrupt halt at this dramatic turning point. The composer died before the final scene was completed - he failed to provide an answer to the central question: will Turandot open herself up to love? Nevertheless, Turandot is one of Puccini's most powerful and at the same time most enigmatic works. Full of emotional extremes and musical power, a story about fear, desire, power and transformation unfolds. With the world-famous aria "Nessun dorma" and a powerful orchestra, Puccini sets a final exclamation mark in the world of opera. In Nuremberg, director Kateryna Sokolova takes on this great question - and finds her own, equally gripping and poetic answer.
