One of the most touching love stories in opera literature returns to the stage of the Staatstheater Nürnberg: Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata - a timeless work about love, social conventions and the pursuit of dignity in a world full of prejudices.
For one precious moment, it seems as if Violetta and Alfredo could look forward to happiness together: A love that transcends social barriers, sustained by genuine affection and the hope of a new beginning. But their happiness does not last long. The shadows of the past, social expectations and moral judgments catch up with the couple - and make it clear who is allowed to belong and who is cast out.
With La traviata - which translates as "the one who has lost her way" - Giuseppe Verdi not only created a deeply emotional opera, but also a courageous social critique. He held up a mirror to his time: with sharp criticism of double standards, social exclusion and a questionable concept of honor. Too explosive for the 19th century theater management, who forced Verdi to move the action a century and a half into the past.
And yet: the emotional power, the topicality of the themes and the rousing music have kept the opera in the hearts of audiences - to this day. La traviata is far more than a classic - it is a powerful plea for humanity and self-determination, packaged in one of the most moving scores in opera history.
