Seduction, wealth, and a diabolical pact: with Igor Stravinsky's opera "The Rake's Progress," the Stadttheater Gießen brings a musical theater production to the stage that is as brilliant as it is dark. The story of the young Tom Rakewell tells of the temptations of quick fortune—and of its high price.

Igor Stravinsky's opera "The Rake's Progress" is loosely based on the eponymous series of copperplate engravings by William Hogarth from the 18th century. The story centers on the young Tom Rakewell, who is seduced by the prospect of an easy and luxurious life. When the mysterious Nick Shadow promises him a large inheritance, Tom leaves his faithful fiancée Anne and moves to London to indulge in the pleasures of the city.

But his supposed happiness quickly turns out to be deceptive. Tom loses himself in decadence, marries the eccentric Baba, and ultimately gambles away his entire fortune. Behind it all is the enigmatic Nick Shadow, who increasingly reveals himself to be a diabolical adversary. In a fateful bet, Tom is finally confronted with the consequences of his decisions.

The story ends tragically: marked by madness and a loss of touch with reality, Tom meets his end in Bedlam mental hospital. His journey from hopeful young man to broken outsider thus becomes a haunting parable about temptation, responsibility, and the illusion of quick happiness.

Stravinsky's music combines Baroque forms with a clear, modern tonal language to create a fascinating sound universe. With sharp wit, emotional intensity, and impressive characters, "The Rake's Progress" unfolds as a timeless musical drama about human weaknesses and the consequences of moral decisions.
