The Badisches Staatstheater is a repertory theater with ensembles for music theater, drama, ballet, concert, young state theater and digital theater - unique in the cultural region of Karlsruhe in its versatility. It is a lively space for art and experimentation, for exchange and discourse. Stories are told in the field of tension between past, present and future, questions are asked and utopias are developed.
The Staatstheater Karlsruhe is one of the largest multi-genre theaters in Germany. With its opera, ballet, concert, drama, young state theater and digital theater sections, a diverse cultural offering is created every year that appeals to the citizens and culture enthusiasts in the region. Artistic experiences are offered that resonate, touch and move the audience. As a state-funded institution, the Staatstheater contributes to the promotion of art and culture in the spirit of the free and democratic basic order and creates a space for exchange and discourse.
The Karlsruhe Theater has a long and eventful history. Resurrected again and again from the ruins of several fires, the history of the building is reflected in the theater. In the 18th century, musical comedies were performed in the court of Durlach, and in 1715 an opera by Reinhard Keiser was staged in Karlsruhe Palace. Over the course of time, the growing importance of the city also increased the demand for a prestigious theater. In 1808, Friedrich Weinbrenner built a new theater building, which became the Grand Ducal Court Theater in 1810 and was widely praised for its décor.
Every year, over 900 events take place in the four venues (Großes Haus, Kleines Haus, Studio, Insel), at guest performances and in special locations in the city. Over 275,000 visitors are welcomed to the theater. The Badisches Staatstheater is an important crowd puller for the city and shines as a beacon beyond Karlsruhe - regionally, nationally and internationally.
