The Bremen Town Musicians are probably the Hanseatic city's best-known landmark. A bronze statue by Gerhard Marcks has commemorated the popular fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm in the heart of Bremen since 1953. According to the story, the donkey, dog, cat and rooster once set off for the city on the Weser to find a better life here.
Small but mighty - there is hardly a saying that applies more to the bronze sculpture of the Town Musicians than this one. At two meters tall, the animals by Gerhard Marcks may not be life-size, but they are all the more popular with Bremen residents and visitors alike. The city's landmark can be found on the left, western side of the town hall.
Once you have found the Bremen Town Musicians, you will notice the donkey's bare front legs. The reason for this is that it is said to bring good luck to embrace the legs. So while you're there, don't miss the opportunity to make a wish to the donkey or simply take a portion of luck with you. But be careful! If you only clasp one leg, you will immediately be exposed as a Bremen layman. Because then, as they say here, one donkey shakes hands with the other.
