With The Sound of Music, the Baden Theater is staging one of the most famous musicals of the 20th century: the moving story of the Trapp family, set against a backdrop of music, love, and historical upheaval. From life in a Salzburg monastery to escape from National Socialism, this world-famous story unfolds, focusing on personal freedom and the unifying power of music.
Novice Maria is sent by the Mother Superior of Nonnberg Abbey to the household of widowed Captain Georg von Trapp to look after his seven children. With her youthful and unconventional manner, she quickly wins their hearts and shows them how much music can enrich their lives. Even the captain's rough exterior begins to crack. A planned wedding between von Trapp and Elsa Schrader does not take place because Maria and Georg confess their love for each other.
But their joy is clouded, because after Austria's annexation to Hitler's German Reich, the new rulers also want to secure the captain's services. A spectacular escape marks the beginning of a new future, and the Trapp family leaves Austria for good, heading for the USA, where they launch an international career as "The Trapp Family Singers"... Maria Augusta von Trapp published her eventful life story in 1949 in her autobiography "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers," which was made into a German Heimatfilm in 1956. An English-language dubbed version was also shown in America and caught the attention of Paramount film producer Richard Halliday, who immediately acquired the English-language rights to the novel. He hired acclaimed musical writers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II to bring the story of the "Trapp Family Singers" to the stage as a musical.
