Following the stunning success of Monteverdi's Vespers and the "Royal!" subscription program in the 2021/22 season, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra is once again performing with the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis and its musical director Lionel Meunier. This time, J. S. Bach's epochal St. Matthew Passion will be performed. The composition alone guarantees a first-class concert experience due to its monumentality and must have left those attending the service in Leipzig's St. Thomas Church on April 11, 1727 speechless in amazement.
In addition to the soloists, there were two choirs and two orchestras (with a total of four flutes, four oboes, strings and continuo), which makes the Passion the most extensive work in Bach's oeuvre, also due to its duration of around 150 minutes. In this time, Bach creates an exuberant panorama of dramatic text interpretation and countless musical ideas that depict the Passion of Jesus Christ in an artistic manner that is unparalleled and remains unrivaled to this day.
