The Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden is one of the most architecturally and culturally outstanding venues in the Hessian state capital. Opened over 130 years ago in the Wilhelminian style, the traditional building still impresses today with its magnificent foyer, ornate columns, gilded ornaments and a spacious ensemble of rooms that breathes history.
As a five-division theater, the Staatstheater unites opera, drama, ballet, concerts and the Young State Theatre (JUST) under one roof - and offers a remarkably diverse program, both artistically and organizationally. Over 50 in-house productions can be experienced on the various stages each season, supplemented by guest performances, staged readings, discussion formats and special events with prominent guests.
All venues can be used in parallel, which means that up to five performances can take place on individual days. Whether classical opera, modern drama, musical family productions or dance - the theater appeals to a wide range of audiences. The repertoire also offers targeted programs and educational opportunities for school classes, groups and families.
A special highlight is the International May Festival, which takes place every year in May - an internationally acclaimed festival with guest performances, premieres and a fresh, modern approach. In addition, the theater offers guided tours, workshops and educational theater formats to provide an in-depth insight into stagecraft and art education.
A visit is worthwhile not only because of the varied performances, but also because of the impressive architecture. Opened in 1894, the theater is one of the most important theater buildings of its time and, with its historical backdrop, offers a special setting for theater experiences at the highest level.
