In the heart of Magdeburg's old town, the Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen art museum combines past and present - a building that combines medieval architecture and contemporary art to create a fascinating overall experience.
The Magdeburg Art Museum is housed in the former "Unser Lieben Frauen" convent complex - the oldest surviving secular building in the city and also one of the most important Romanesque complexes in Germany. In its rooms, from the Romanesque church to the cloister and convent building to the modern exhibition wings, the museum impressively demonstrates how historical substance and contemporary art interact.

As the central museum for contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt, the museum houses one of the most important collections of modern art in the region. The focus is on works after 1945 with a strong emphasis on sculpture, media art and photography, supplemented by historical holdings from antiquity to the Baroque period. Since the renovation and expansion (including in 2022), the north wing has increasingly presented international positions, often in dialogical juxtaposition with older works. A sculpture park stretches around the monastery grounds, bringing art into the open air with works from 1945 to the present day and interweaving architecture with sculptural art. Parts of the medieval church, the cloister and other historical elements are also used for special exhibitions, concerts and educational projects.
Visitors to the art museum not only experience changing exhibitions, but also a place where light, space and art are in a continuous dialog - a lively intersection of past, present and artistic vision.
