The Theater an der Wien is one of the most important and traditional music theaters in Vienna. Founded in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder, the librettist of the "Magic Flute", the theater can look back on a long history of outstanding world premieres - including Beethoven's Fidelio.
After an extensive general renovation, the theater was reopened in October 2024, technically modernized and carefully restored. Today, it presents itself as a modern opera house that sets an unmistakable artistic accent with a diverse program ranging from baroque to contemporary opera. As a so-called stagione house, the productions are performed in concentrated periods, which enables the highest artistic quality. In addition to the main building, the Theater an der Wien operates a second venue, the Chamber Opera, which is dedicated in particular to smaller, more experimental music theater. The Kammeroper is a place for discoveries and innovative productions that often break new ground in music theater and promote young talent.

Under the directorship of the renowned director Stefan Herheim, the MusikTheater an der Wien focuses on innovative productions, strong interpretations and a broad repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary opera. Particular emphasis is placed on musical authenticity, stylistic diversity and artistic signature.
The house is known for its bold programming, which regularly stages works outside the mainstream - including rarely performed operas, staged oratorios and musical rarities. International guests, young talents and changing orchestral ensembles provide new impulses every season. As part of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, the Theater an der Wien is a fixed point in Vienna's musical life - for all those who not only want to hear opera, but also experience it.
