The Historical Museum of the Palatinate Speyer delights visitors with its unique combination of history, archaeology and wine culture. Between the cathedral treasury, Roman finds and spectacular special exhibitions, the past comes alive here.

Located directly on Cathedral Square, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate is one of the most important museums of cultural history in Germany. Its roots go back to the 19th century: in 1869, the collections of the Historical Society of the Palatinate, the Rhine District and the city of Speyer were brought together. In 1910, the museum found its home in the magnificent building designed by Gabriel von Seidl on Domplatz, followed by a modern extension in 1990, which has since provided space for large special exhibitions.

Today, the museum has around one million exhibits, only some of which can be shown in the permanent exhibitions. Highlights include the famous cathedral treasure, the "Golden Hat of Schifferstadt" and the oldest sealed wine bottle in the world from the 4th century. Five permanent exhibitions take visitors through prehistory, Roman times, the Middle Ages, modern times and wine culture. Many other objects are preserved in the "Alte Baumwollspinnerei" collection center, where restoration and scientific work is also carried out.

A particular crowd-puller is the Young Museum, which has been the first children's and youth museum in Rhineland-Palatinate to bring history to life in a playful way since 1999. Interactive stations, changing themes and hands-on activities make it a lively place for families.

With over 200,000 visitors a year, renowned special exhibitions of international standing and a unique blend of history, archaeology, religious culture and wine tradition, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate Speyer is a cultural beacon that brings the past to life and provides inspiration for the future.
