The Residenztheater Munich, affectionately known as "das Resi", is one of the most important theaters in the German-speaking world and the main venue of the Bavarian State Theater. Located directly on the historic Max-Joseph-Platz, together with the magnificent Cuvilliés Theater and the Marstall, it forms a cultural ensemble in the heart of Munich's Residenz.

The new Residenztheater was opened in 1951 as a modern theater building with around 877 seats. The facilities, which were highly praised at the time, are still impressive today: a versatile stage space, excellent acoustics and clear sightlines create optimal conditions for sophisticated drama, new plays and contemporary ensemble theater. Since 2019, artistic director Andreas Beck has been helping to reinterpret classical works and anchor modern drama in the repertoire.

The Cuvilliés Theater (also known as the Altes Residenztheater), which was built between 1751 and 1753 in the rococo style and faithfully rebuilt in its current location in the Residenz after the war, offers a unique historical contrast. The white, red and gold auditorium is one of the most important rococo stages in Europe and hosts occasional performances in a unique setting. This is complemented by the Marstall, a studio stage with around 160 seats, ideal for experimental formats and modern productions. Together with the main building and the Cuvilliés Theater, it forms a diverse network of venues.

The Residenztheater impresses not only with its architecture, but also with its artistic achievements. Over 50 actors and actresses and a large creative team put on an annual program of world premieres and modern interpretations of well-known classics. Under Andreas Beck's direction, the theater promotes a contemporary approach to classical material, with exciting new interpretations and socially relevant perspectives.
