The historic ducal palace of Celle, nestled in the picturesque old town, is home to the Schlosstheater Celle - one of the oldest and regularly performed baroque theaters in Europe.
The Schauspielhaus was built between 1670 and 1675 under Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg - inspired by Italian opera architecture with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium. It originally served the court before it was later opened to the public. In 1935, it was extensively renovated and equipped with state-of-the-art theater and stage technology. Today, the house and its own ensemble present over 20 premieres and around 600 events every year - including music, drama, children's and youth theater.

In addition to the main hall, there are two intimate studio stages in the castle: the Malersaal and the Turmbühne, both with around 40 seats. During the summer months, performances also take place in the castle's atmospheric inner courtyard. Since 2015, the program has been expanded to include the modern HALLE 19 on the site of the former CD barracks.
The Schlosstheater offers a diverse repertoire ranging from classical dramas and contemporary productions to children's and youth theater. This makes it a cultural driving force in the region and makes a decisive contribution to the identity of the town and district of Celle - in a historic setting with a unique flair.
A visit to the Schlosstheater Celle combines centuries-old theatrical tradition, baroque ambience and lively culture at the highest level.
