To the east of the abbey ruins stands the Katharinenturm, a freestanding bell tower that was probably built around the middle of the 12th century due to the collapse of the north tower of the abbey ruins in 1100 and the need to create a new home for its bells as quickly as possible.
Today, the tower only houses one bell: the Lullus bell. As the inscription shows, it dates back to 1038, making it Germany's oldest cast bell. It is rung on Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday and December 25 at 12:00 noon. Additionally on the 1st Sunday for the official opening of the Lullus Festival at 19:45.
Every first Friday of the month at 3 p.m. there is a public tour of St. Catherine's Tower. The meeting point is in front of the citizens' office, Am Markt 1 in Bad Hersfeld.
