Leica World presents Ragnar Axelsson: Where the World is Melting —a powerful photo exhibition by the Icelandic documentary photographer, who has been capturing life on the edge of the habitable North for over four decades.

In black-and-white images of elemental power,Ragnar Axelsson (1958)takes usto the remotest regions of the Arctic and reveals what remains hidden to many: the rugged beauty of the ice landscapes as well as the existential world of the people and animals who live there. His portraits of hunters, fishermen, Inuit communities, and reindeer herders are more than documentation—they tell of personal destinies and traditional everyday realities that are undergoing profound transformation as a result of accelerated climate change.

Axelsson seeks close contact with his subjects, spending long periods of time on location and sharing the often arduous daily lives of people whose trust he has earned over decades. As a result, his images become the voices of those who are directly experiencing the changes in the world. At the same time, his landscape photographs reflect the raw power of nature and the fragility of an ecosystem that is increasingly threatened by global warming. The exhibition brings together a personal selection from Axelsson's life's work, which impressively demonstrates the possibilities of photography as an artistic testimony and political plea in the face of climate change.
