A rare treasure from Bohemia: Josef Suk's late Romantic sound world meets the timeless elegance of Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto. With Tomáš Netopil conducting and Julian Steckel as soloist, an evening full of dazzling musical joy and deeply felt melancholy unfolds.
The music of Josef Suk is still a rarity in this country. Tomáš Netopil is passionately devoted to Suk's late Romantic works, in this case the Symphony in E major from 1898, which combines Bohemian musical joy with fin de siècle sentiment. This is complemented by the elegiac, at times almost nostalgic tone of Dvořák's famous Cello Concerto, composed in the USA in 1895. The virtuoso yet expressively lyrical solo part is performed by the acclaimed German cellist Julian Steckel.
Julian Steckel has won numerous competitions and performs as a cellist with renowned orchestras. In addition to his solo career, he is a sought-after chamber musician and teaches as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil has been General Music Director of the Aalto Music Theater Essen and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra for nine years. In addition to engagements with leading orchestras worldwide, he founded the International Music Academy Kroměříž in 2018 to promote young musicians.
