The motto for the anniversary of the Bremen Philharmonic Society is: 200 years - and not a bit quiet. An impressive sign that musical passion, cultural radiance and creative energy have lost none of their power even after two centuries.
As one of the oldest civically organized concert societies in Germany, the Philharmonic Society of Bremen has played a key role in shaping the city's musical life since it was founded in 1825. For over two centuries, it has brought national and international musicians to Bremen, commissioned compositions and promoted musical education.
The exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Bremen Philharmonic Society and offers something for the eyes and ears. In addition to exhibits such as instruments, portraits and sheet music, media stations with musical examples, interviews and spoken contributions accompany and deepen the exhibition. 200 years of music history and civic engagement are presented against the backdrop of social change. Topics include the professionalization of musical life in the 19th century, music and club life under National Socialism and the gradual expansion of the concert programme after 1945 in response to changing listening habits and cultural diversity.
