Kunsthalle Bremen - A place of art history and the present

The Kunsthalle Bremen, founded in 1823 as the Kunstverein in Bremen, is one of the oldest and most important art museums in Germany. Since its opening in 1849, it has presented an impressive collection spanning over 700 years of European art history - from the Gothic period to the present day. The Kunsthalle is sponsored by the Kunstverein in Bremen, which still runs the museum privately today.

Collection and highlights
The collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen is diverse and includes paintings, sculptures, prints and new media. Particularly noteworthy are works by artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Max Liebermann and Paula Modersohn-Becker. An outstanding feature is the Museum of Prints and Drawings with over 220,000 drawings and prints - one of the most important collections of its kind in Europe.

Since 2020, the Kunsthalle has been presenting its collection under the title "20/20 Vision" in a new, thematically oriented arrangement. Works are placed in dialog to open up new perspectives on art history. Another highlight is the installation "Above - Between - Below" by light artist James Turrell, which extends over three floors and integrates the architecture of the building into the artwork.

Architecture and extensions
The Kunsthalle Bremen building combines historical and modern elements. The original building from 1849 was extended in 1902 and two modern wings were added in 2011. These extensions offer spacious exhibition areas and rooms for events, workshops and seminars. The architecture reflects the dialog between tradition and innovation that characterizes the Kunsthalle.

Events and education
In addition to the exhibitions, the Kunsthalle Bremen offers a varied program of events, guided tours, workshops and educational activities for all age groups. The aim is to make art accessible to a wide audience and to promote dialog on current social issues.
