Artist, publisher, virtuoso: the Dutch engraver and painter Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) was a true all-round genius. A master of transformation and imitation, he exceeded the expectations of his time with his innovative techniques and artistic visions.

In addition to technical brilliance, his choice of subject matter is inspiring: Heroes, goddesses and celestials radiate an impressive dynamism and reflect a fascination with ancient mythologies and Christian themes. At the same time, Goltzius created special allegories that stimulated thought through the interplay of tradition and reinvention. He skillfully mastered various styles and techniques with which he transported antiquity into his own time and created images of enduring fascination.

With around 80 sheets, the exhibition spans an arc from his first work as a publisher to his mature late work as a printmaker. It combines the highlights of the art collection of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with treasures from the Kupferstichkabinett at the Landesmuseum Hannover and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the richly detailed, ever-changing world of this extraordinary artist.
