It is no coincidence that Bruce Liu's name is reminiscent of a certain kung fu legend: "When I was 15 years old, I was said to resemble Bruce Lee." His Chinese birth name Liú Xiǎoyǔ was too complicated in his current home of Montréal - so in 2020 he decided to call himself "Bruce" from then on.
The enchanting playing and the subsequent ovations at Bruce Liu's Stuttgart debut are still ringing in our ears - and so there will be a happy reunion when the winner of the 2021 Chopin Competition can now be experienced with orchestra after his solo recital. In addition to the poetry and airy touch for which Bruce Liu is praised, Rachmaninov's second piano concerto occasionally requires the paw, which the son of Chinese parents, born in Paris in 1997, possesses in equal measure. After that, the dramatic temperature rises again by several degrees in Shostakovich's 10th Symphony.
