A home game for a world star of painting: With the Schleswig-Holstein Economy Art Prize 2025, the Landesmuseum Schloss Gottorf is honoring the internationally acclaimed artist Daniel Richter - for the first time in over twenty years with an exhibition in his home country.
The 2025 Art Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Economy goes to Daniel Richter, one of Germany's most important contemporary painters. Richter grew up in Lütjenburg in the district of Plön and became a formative figure in Hamburg's art and alternative music scene in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, he achieved his international breakthrough with large-format paintings in which he condensed motifs from newspaper images, historical sources and pop culture symbols into visually powerful narratives.

His more recent works move between figuration and abstraction, between expressive color and social reflection. They combine political themes, personal experiences and an unmistakable visual language that makes him one of the most exciting artists of his generation. As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Daniel Richter also influences the next generation of young painters. His works are exhibited worldwide - from Frankfurt to Vienna and London to Louisiana and Denver.
The presentation at Gottorf Castle is his first exhibition in Schleswig-Holstein for over twenty years and at the same time a return to his artistic roots. The prize is awarded by the Dr. Dietrich Schulz Art Foundation in cooperation with the State Museum and the Kulturring der Studien- und Fördergesellschaft der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Wirtschaft. With this award, the state honors an artist who constantly explores the boundaries between the local and the global, between history and the present in his art.
