In a world where machines set the pace and emotions are suppressed, Hard Times, based on the novel by Charles Dickens, explores the search for humanity, imagination, and social justice—reimagined as a musical theater experience.

In the fictional industrial town of Coketown in northern England, society is dominated by strict rules, rigid rationality, and the harsh rhythm of machinery. Under the authoritarian leadership of their father, Louisa and Tom learn to suppress their feelings and creativity. But when Sissy, the abandoned child of a circus acrobat, enters their lives, a space opens up for compassion, imagination, and new perspectives. At the same time, the factory workers' resistance to exploitation and injustice takes shape—a collective struggle for dignity and hope in a world increasingly dominated by efficiency and mechanics.

The new stage adaptation of Hard Times at the Thalia Theater Hamburg takes Charles Dickens' multi-layered novel from 1854 as its starting point and transforms it into a musical experience in which acting, singing, and narrative power come together. Directed by Antú Romero Nunes, who, together with his team, brings the characters and conflicts of this story into the present day while emphasizing the timeless themes of work, compassion, and justice.

This production explores the question of what it means to remain human in a society that values performance, utility, and productivity above all else. Hard Times is thus not only a literary adaptation, but also a contemporary reflection on human values, social responsibility, and the power of imagination, which can create hope even in the hardest of times.
