Intrigue, misunderstandings, and hidden loyalties characterize Tancredi, Gioachino Rossini's early opera about love, honor, and political obligation. Against the backdrop of impending war, a drama unfolds between personal truth and public power.

While Syracuse prepares for battle against the Saracens, the king's daughter Amenaide comes under suspicion of high treason. An intercepted letter, supposedly addressed to the enemy leader Solamir, is interpreted as a declaration of love and puts her life in danger. In fact, the letter was intended for Tancredi – an exiled knight and Amenaide's secret lover, who returns to the city unrecognized. Although he manages to save Amenaide from execution, doubts about her loyalty remain. While political alliances, an ended family feud, and a forced marriage further complicate the situation, war is inexorably approaching. Tancredi is faced with the decision of leading the city into battle – and at the same time wrestling with his own feelings.

As complex as the libretto may seem, Rossini shapes the action into music with clarity and elegance. Tancredi launched the international career of the composer, who was only twenty years old at the time. The score follows the bel canto ideal of the 18th century and combines classical grace with compositional innovation. A characteristic feature is the title role as a trouser role for mezzo-soprano – a casting choice that owes much to the end of the castrato era and lends the character a special emotional depth. Despite tragic entanglements, the opera maintains a balanced, almost cheerful tone, which lends the work an Arcadian lightness and makes Tancredi a special contribution to Rossini's operatic oeuvre to this day.
