2026 marks an extraordinary anniversary for the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra: for 125 years, the orchestra has shaped the musical life of the city – an occasion that will be celebrated with a festive program that itself exudes musical history.

125 years ago, Bielefeld City Council decided to establish a municipal orchestra, which initially consisted of only 36 musicians. Today, the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra is an international symphony orchestra with 70 members from 15 nations and has become an integral part of the city's cultural life. The anniversary concert picks up on this historical arc and focuses on two works that are also celebrating significant anniversaries: Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, composed 125 years ago, and Leoš Janáček's Sinfonietta, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Mahler's Fourth Symphony opens the evening with a glimpse of a turning point in history. It bids farewell to the dramatic exuberance of the 19th century and moves between retrospection and new beginnings. On the one hand, it seems almost classical—influences from Haydn and Schubert are clearly audible. On the other hand, with its clear form, chamber music-inspired orchestration, and especially the vocal finale, it points far into the future. Mahler himself described the work as a “humoresque”: an “upside-down world” in which idyll, irony, and abyss lie close together. No other of his symphonies works so consistently with ambiguity in the guise of apparent cheerfulness and childlike naivety.

Leoš Janáček's Sinfonietta deliberately sets a contrasting tone. Where Mahler exercises restraint, Janáček unfolds a powerful, optimistic sound, framed by festive brass fanfares. The Sinfonietta is an expression of new beginnings, energy, and collective optimism—a work that looks ahead with its luminous musical language.

The juxtaposition of these two compositions unfolds a program of great dramatic intensity. It allows the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra to impressively demonstrate its stylistic range, tonal sophistication, and musical excellence—as a resounding tribute to 125 years of orchestral tradition and, at the same time, as a confident look toward the future.
