The SCHIRN is dedicating the world's first solo exhibition to the pioneer of the Dada movement Suzanne Duchamp (1889-1963).
Using abstract paintings, experimental collages and figurative representations, the retrospective shows the versatile work of the artist, who contributed to the development of Dadaism in the 1910s and 1920s.
Although Duchamp's works are represented in world-famous collections, their artistic significance has long remained in the shadow of their brothers Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Jacques Villon. The exhibition focuses in particular on Duchamp's innovative use of materials and media. Combining aspects of the readymade, poetic inscriptions and geometric forms, she created a unique, subtle and humorous visual language. In addition to her Dada works, the exhibition also highlights Duchamp's later work phases, including her figurative and landscape paintings from the 1930s and 1940s as well as her late abstract work.
