In the summer of 2026, the lakeside landscape around Lake Neusiedl will once again be transformed into one of Europe's most spectacular stages. The Mörbisch Lake Festival presents "A Cage Full of Fools," a musical that uniquely combines entertainment, social commentary, and powerful emotions. Between the water, the sky, and the vast natural backdrop of the national park, a theatrical experience emerges that has long since become a hallmark of the region.
The musical is based on the French play by Jean Poiret and was later developed into an international musical success by Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein. Since the 1980s, the play has been thrilling audiences worldwide with its mix of fast-paced mix-ups, emotional moments, and a clear message: self-determination, tolerance, and love should overcome social boundaries. The song "I Am What I Am" in particular has become an anthem for self-confidence and social acceptance.
The plot centers on Georges, who has been running a glamorous drag club in Saint-Tropez for years. His partner Albin, known as the stage star Zaza, thrills audiences with his shows full of glitz and charm. The seemingly well-established life of the two is turned upside down when Georges' son Jean-Michel wants to introduce his fiancée and her conservative family. What makes this particularly difficult is that the future father-in-law is an arch-conservative politician with strict moral values. Now begins a comedic game of pretense, misunderstandings, and emotional surprises, in which family, love, and social expectations collide.

Alfons Haider and Mark Seibert take on the leading roles with great stage presence. The dynamic between the characters is particularly exciting, requiring both comedic and emotional depth. General Director Haider emphasizes the collaborative nature of the production: the portrayal of a "crazy family" shows that cohesion, humor, and mutual respect are central themes of the play.
Andreas Gergen, who has already caused a sensation with productions such as "Mamma Mia!" in Mörbisch, is once again responsible for the direction. Gergen's staging combines Broadway glamour, emotional ballads, and fast-paced comedy. The musical skilfully alternates between big revue numbers and quiet, thoughtful moments – a dramatic rhythm that makes the audience laugh and reflect in equal measure.
However, the special magic of the Seefestspiele is created not only by the production itself, but also by the unique surroundings. When the lights of the stage are reflected on the surface of Lake Neusiedl in the evening, nature and art merge into one great overall experience. The audience becomes part of an atmosphere that goes far beyond classical musical theater.
The performances will take place from July 16 to August 22, 2026, with an additional performance on August 12, 2026. This offers ample opportunity to experience this classic of musical history in one of the most beautiful open-air stage settings in Europe.
