On the stage of the Staatstheater Kassel, Deutsche Symphonie presents a historically deeply rooted and currently urgent evening of musical theater that focuses on resistance, utopia, and social ambivalence.
In Deutsche Symphonie, the Staatstheater Kassel presents the first staged performance of Hanns Eisler's large-scale vocal symphonic work based on texts by Bertolt Brecht and Ignazio Silone – a piece that lies somewhere between oratorio, political song, and dramatic music, exploring historical and contemporary areas of tension. Under the musical direction of Kiril Stankow and directed by Paul-Georg Dittrich, the production takes the audience on a dense journey, both in terms of sound and content, through textual and musical reflections on society, solidarity, and contradiction that transcend the boundaries of traditional opera forms.
The premiere will take place in the modern INTERIM building of the State Theater, a flexibly designed venue that will enable temporary theater operations during the renovation of the main building and at the same time open up new spatial perspectives for large-scale musical theater productions. Deutsche Symphonie is part of the festival "Deutschland, Deutschland unter anderem" (Germany, Germany among others), which thematically traces the cultural heritage of the early 20th century and its repercussions into the present, thus opening a lively dialogue between history, music, and political awareness.
Premiere May 30, 2026
