L'Orfeo, a milestone in music history, will be performed at the Schlosstheater Fulda: Claudio Monteverdi's Favola in musica is considered one of the earliest operas ever written and combines scenic storytelling with passionate music.
L'Orfeo unfolds the ancient myth of the Thracian singer Orpheus, who attempts to overcome death and bring his young lover Eurydice back from the underworld through the power of his music. Monteverdi approaches this tragedy with an incomparable blend of emotional intensity and musical inventiveness: the opera traverses the entire spectrum of human emotions – from exuberant joy at the wedding to deep despair and ultimately insatiable longing. In clearly structured musical images, the composition, written around 1607, brings together singing, instrumental playing and dramatic narration to create a new art form, marking a turning point in the tradition of musical theater.
On the stage of the Schlosstheater, the various roles and moods of this classic work come to life when singers and ensemble, in collaboration with the orchestra, bring the timeless power of music to life: an experience that makes the mythological story and its universal themes immediately tangible.
