Rafaële Giovanola is no longer a stranger to Mainz audiences, at the latest with her FAUST award-winning choreography Sphynx and the acclaimed guest performances of her ensemble CocoonDance at the tanzmainz festival. She has just been named the best contemporary choreographer on Italian stages in 2024 by the Italian trade magazine Danza&Danza.
The popular version of the biblical proverb "He who steps into danger will fall in it" (Sirach 3:26) is echoed in the saying "He who puts himself in danger will perish in it". And indeed, art often involves a pinch of risk for those involved. Whether with a net or a false bottom, whether authentic or merely illusionistic - every real piece of art requires crossing boundaries and involves the risk of falling and failing. This is where the dancers are in demand, not as daredevils addicted to thrills and the ultimate adrenaline rush, but in their professionalism, their trust in each other and their vulnerability. Gravity takes us into the wonderful world of their "risk space".
