Rock passion meets biblical drama: in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar at Bühnen Bern, the last week of Jesus' life is staged in a powerful and contemporary way.
This gripping new interpretation by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice unfolds at the Stadttheater Bern, telling the traditional Gospel as a rock opera of unimagined intensity. From the triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion, we follow a charismatic Jesus caught between the expectation of the Messiah, human doubt and passionate love. In the midst of the turmoil are Mary Magdalene and Judas, whose relationships sharpen our view of power, loyalty and betrayal.
This production promises not only rousing music and iconic songs such as "I Don't Know How to Love Him", but also a visually dense and emotional production directed by Tomo Sugao. The costumes, video and stage design build bridges between the biblical original and today's visual language - all of which can be experienced in a space in which light, sound and body come together. The musicians and the ensemble embark on an intense journey that makes both the spirituality and the raw reality of human suffering tangible.
When you step onto the stage at Bühnen Bern, you don't expect a purely retro show, but a multi-layered experience in which religion, pop culture and reflection on the soul form a shared world of sound - loud, honest and lasting.
