With "The Bajazzo", Ruggero Leoncavallo created an opera in which art and reality flow inseparably into one another - a gripping chamber play of great emotions.
How much human being is there in an artist? How much real life goes into a stage show? With his masterpiece The Bajazzo, Ruggero Leoncavallo has created a gripping drama full of passion, intrigue, despair and melancholy, whose thriller-like plot, wide emotional range and haunting music go straight to the core.
In less than an hour and a half, a group of circus performers live through every human tragedy imaginable: Love, jealousy, revenge, betrayal ... The boundaries between art and reality become blurred until the characters themselves no longer know whether they are still in their evening performance or already back on the cruel ground of reality. When the increasingly fast-paced maelstrom of great emotions finally unleashes in two murders on the open stage and the Bajazzo shouts "The comedy is over!", all that remains in the sudden silence after the curtain falls is the shocked question: was that real or just an act?
