Unrequited love, longing, and emotional extremes: Jules Massenet's opera "Werther" brings Goethe's famous novel to the stage and tells the story of a passion that finds no outlet. At Theater Freiburg, this drama about love and despair becomes an intense evening of musical theater.
At the center of the opera is the young Werther, who recognizes Charlotte as his soulmate and falls passionately in love with her. But Charlotte is already engaged to Albert and feels bound by this promise. Although she is attracted to Werther's emotional intensity, she fears the consequences of a relationship with him and tries to keep her distance.
For Werther, this unrequited love becomes an increasingly intense inner conflict. Unable to let go of his feelings, he becomes increasingly immersed in a world of longing and hope. When his desire for a future together finally proves unattainable, he sees no way out of his despair.
In 1892, Jules Massenet transformed Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther" into a grand opera that audibly conveys the emotional turmoil of the characters with lyrical intensity and dramatic expressiveness. In the production at Theater Freiburg, the singers come particularly close to the audience: As if in an arena, Werther and Charlotte meet on stage and circle each other—a haunting interplay of attraction, resistance, and tragic fate.
