At the Universum® Bremen hands-on museum, the focus is on the visitors. Their own experiences and questions form the basis for understanding. Interactive hands-on exhibits, room-in-room installations and media elements invite visitors to try things out.
Generating lightning, traversing a dark tactile labyrinth or climbing 165 tower steps: At Universum® Bremen, visitors can explore scientific phenomena both indoors and outdoors. Depending on your mood, you can spend a whole day here in a variety of ways - as individual as the guests themselves.
40,000 stainless steel shingles sparkle in the sun and make Universum® Bremen visible from afar. However, it is not only the silver-colored main building that makes the North German science center shine, but also in a figurative sense: with its permanent exhibition on the topics of technology, man and nature as well as a park-like outdoor area and a cube-shaped building for temporary special exhibitions, Universum®, which opened in 2000, offers an unusual triad that is unique in this form in Germany. An impressive silhouette awaits newly arrived guests, arousing curiosity and promising plenty of variety.

Discover technology, man and nature in the belly of the whale
The gleaming, organically shaped main building, which was designed by Bremen architect Thomas Klumpp and is affectionately referred to as the whale by the people of Bremen, houses the permanent exhibition on the topics of technology, people and nature. Numerous interactive experiments and experience rooms allow visitors to experience science up close and with all their senses. The spectrum of around 250 exhibits on 4,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space ranges from an oversized marble run or lightning machine to giant earpieces and a glowing data globe. At a composing table, guests can translate objects they have arranged themselves into digital music. An oversized globe illustrates complex data sets relating to global weather patterns, ocean currents and pollutant concentrations. And team spirit is put to the test in a version of the well-known computer game "Pac-Man". The wide range of experiments on offer playfully appeals to different senses and interests, while at the same time encouraging interaction between visitors. In addition to the discovery zones, where visitors can explore and try things out to their heart's content, each themed area also provides a wealth of background information in in-depth zones. With expert interviews, texts, graphics and real prototypes, a constantly up-to-date depth of information is provided in cooperation with renowned research institutes.
In-depth knowledge through changing special exhibitions
While the permanent exhibition explains basic scientific phenomena, the changing special exhibitions focus on in-depth special areas. Interactive, contemporary and entertaining, the cube-shaped special exhibition building focuses on a wide variety of topics. For example, an exhibition on the mysterious world of particle physics was presented with scientific partners such as the renowned Hamburg research center DESY, or the path of a cocoa bean to a chocolate bar was traced with the traditional Bremen chocolatier HACHEZ. Socially relevant topics such as demographic change and the future of mobility have also taken center stage. This broad spectrum of content and partners constantly creates new perspectives and conceptual approaches as well as surprising exhibition scenographies.

Outdoor area provides fun in the fresh air
The outdoor area offers further experiments with various landscape elements and around 25 hands-on stations on the subject of movement. In the 5,000 square meter scientific adventure landscape, visitors can test their coordination skills, cross a ravine, experiment with water or explore different types of rock. At the Moon Jumper station, guests can jump up to four meters into the air, while the Camera Obscura literally turns perception on its head. Anyone who wants to can also climb the 27-metre-high Tower of the Skies, which has exciting hands-on stations at every intermediate level.
Science shows, dinner in the dark and more
Universum® also offers 30-minute science shows every day, where visitors can experience amazing experiments. Changing special programs for different age groups complement the range of events. Children get their money's worth at the humorous and educational Science Theater or can celebrate their birthday at Universum®. Brave gourmets have the opportunity to take part in an unusual "Dinner in the Dark", while creative family activities also take place during the vacations and on some weekends. The program of events at Universum® is rounded off by lecture series, discussion events and readings in the evenings.
