Dutch director Nina Spijkers, who has already staged The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Volksoper, takes over the production and sets out in search of its escapist and hedonistic potential
The subject of the operetta Eine Nacht in Venedig (A Night in Venice), written in 1883, took advantage of the exuberant enthusiasm for the Serenissima in Vienna, which reached a further climax with the opening of the "Venice in Vienna" theme park in the Prater in 1895. The plot revolves around the pleasure-seeking Duke of Urbino, a notorious womanizer who wants to take advantage of the carnival season to attempt a conquest under the cover of the colourful masquerade ... Specifically, the Duke has his sights set on Barbara, the wife of the Venetian senator Delaqua. Several plans to prevent this on the one hand and to promote it on the other interfere with each other and so the Duke is finally faced with two Barbaras!
