In the heart of Regensburg's old town, housed in the historic Salzstadel on the banks of the Danube, a fascinating tour through 2000 years of the city's history unfolds over two floors. The exhibition is not only dedicated to the great eras and events, but also focuses on the everyday life of the people - lively, vivid and surprisingly approachable.

Regensburg, once a Roman legionary camp under the name Castra Regina, developed into an important trading center in the Middle Ages. As a free imperial city and seat of the Perpetual Diet, it became the political stage of Europe. The exhibition shows how Regensburg became a cosmopolitan city on the river over the centuries - a place where cultures met, trade flourished and architecture left impressive traces.

A particular highlight is the interactive city model, which impressively illustrates how the city's structure has changed over the centuries. Visitors can see how Regensburg has changed while retaining its unique identity. The World Heritage globe invites visitors on a virtual journey around the globe: it shows all UNESCO World Heritage sites worldwide and places Regensburg in a global context. The permanent exhibition in the basement is supplemented by regularly changing special exhibitions. These shed light on a wide variety of aspects relating to the topic of World Heritage - from issues of monument protection to cultural identities in transition.
The exhibition in the Salzstadel makes history tangible. It invites visitors to discover, marvel and understand - and impressively demonstrates why Regensburg, with its rich history and well-preserved cityscape, rightly bears the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
