What kind of story is it when two children embark on an adventure in which they meet fairy-tale characters and return changed as adults?
The Snow Queen is a magnificent and multi-layered opera that sheds a whole new light on the fairy tale on which it is based. The Danish composer's highly complex score, structured down to the smallest detail, sounds emotional, sensitive and liberating. He depicts the individual emotional states of the characters in a colorful and impressive way. Abrahamsen's preference for snow, ice and cold in particular becomes audible; the natural elements should be understood as a metaphor for people who have lost contact with each other. But in the end, warmth returns to their hearts - Kay and Gerda reaffirm their deep inner bond:
"It's summer, warm and blessed summer." The journey into the innermost depths of the human soul features a top-class cast with Georg Zeppenfeld as the Snow Queen, Christa Mayer as the Grandmother, Jessica Niles and Louise McClelland Jacobsen as Gerda and Valerie Eickhoff as Kay.
