The Mülheim an der Ruhr Art Museum is located in the historic building of the former Imperial Main Post Office at Synagogenplatz 1. With its striking gabled architecture and colorful forecourt, the listed post office (built 1895-97, most recently extensively renovated from 2019 to 2024) forms a striking ensemble in Mülheim's city center.
The museum presentation extends over three floors and around 1,200 m² of exhibition space. The focus is on the collection of classical modernism, in particular the important Ziegler Collection, supplemented by works from post-war modernism and international contemporary art.
Some highlights: Paintings by Franz Marc, August Macke, Emil Nolde, Lyonel Feininger and Otto Müller convey a clear atmosphere and intuitive joy in beauty. The collection also includes expressive works by Max Beckmann and Oskar Kokoschka as well as important prints and posters by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys and Heinrich Zille. The outdoor design on Synagogenplatz with the relief and fountain by Otto Herbert Hajek from 1977 turns the public space in front of the museum into part of the art trail - a lively approach to the institution.

Educational formats such as guided tours, workshops and dialogical tours for school classes and families are an integral part of the museum. Art education is actively practiced here and connects the collection with the local cultural identity.
The museum was reopened in May 2024 after several years of renovation and presents itself as modern and welcoming - with barrier-free access, a pleasant sense of space and attractive special exhibitions. It combines modern art with the charm of a historic building - an inspiring place for artistic discoveries in a special atmosphere.
