The Landestheater Linz is considered the cultural heart of Upper Austria and is one of the largest and most traditional theaters in Austria. In the city on the Danube, the theater has established itself over more than two centuries as a lively venue for music, drama, dance, and musical theater. With several venues in the city center, it is a striking testament to how theater history and urban identity intertwine.
Since 2013, the centerpiece of the venue has been the modern Musiktheater am Volksgarten, an architecturally and acoustically outstanding opera and music theater that presents operas, operettas, ballets, and musical productions in a contemporary form. In addition, the historic Schauspielhaus an der Promenade and the Kammerspiele theater shape the city's cultural life with plays, experimental formats, and smaller performances.
Around 800 contributors from over 40 nations work at the Linz State Theater, both on stage and behind the scenes, making it a vibrant venue for the performing arts. In a season with around 800 performances, more than 300,000 visitors annually experience a rich repertoire—from classical operas and dramatic plays to contemporary productions and plays for young audiences.
Especially in Linz, which sees itself as a cultural city that balances tradition with innovative programming, the Landestheater is an identity-forming meeting place: here, great classics, bold new interpretations, and interdisciplinary projects come together and reflect the diversity of a vibrant theater scene.
